BMW to set up battery research center in Germany

BMW is investing 170 million euros ($181.5 million) in a research center in Parsdorf, outside Munich, to tailor batteries to its future needs, media reported. The center, which will open later this year, will produce near-standard samples for next-generation lithium-ion batteries.

BMW will produce battery samples for the NeueKlasse (NewClass) electric drivetrain architecture at the new center, although BMW currently has no plans to establish its own large-scale battery production. The center will also focus on other systems and production processes that can be incorporated into standard production. For sustainability reasons, the operation of the new BMW center will use electricity generated from renewable energy sources, including electricity provided by photovoltaic systems on the building’s roof.

BMW said in a statement that it will use the center to study the value-creation process of batteries, with the aim of helping future suppliers produce batteries that meet the company’s own specifications.
