Macan EV deliveries delayed until 2024 due to slow software development

Porsche officials have confirmed that the release of the Macan EV will be delayed until 2024, due to delays in the development of advanced new software by the Volkswagen Group’s CARIAD division.

Porsche mentioned in its IPO prospectus that the group is currently developing the E3 1.2 platform with CARIAD and Audi for deployment in the all-electric Macan BEV, which the group plans to start delivering in 2024. Due in part to delays by CARIAD and the group in developing the E3 1.2 platform, the group has had to delay the start of production (SOP) of the Macan BEV.

The Macan EV will be one of the first production vehicles to use the premium platform electric (PPE) developed jointly by Audi and Porsche, which will use an 800-volt electrical system similar to the Taycan, optimised for improved range and up to 270kW of DC fast charging. The Macan EV is scheduled to enter production by the end of 2023 at Porsche’s factory in Leipzig, where the current electric model is built.

Porsche noted that the successful development of the E3 1.2 platform and the start of production and rollout of the Macan EV are prerequisites for the continued development of more vehicle launches in the coming years, which are also expected to rely on the software platform. Also in the prospectus, Porsche expressed concern that delays or difficulties in E3 1.2 platform development could be further exacerbated by the fact that CARIAD is currently developing separate E3 2.0 versions of its platform in parallel.

Affected by the delay in software development, the delayed release is not only the Porsche Macan EV, but also its PPE platform sister model Audi Q6 e-tron, which may be delayed for about a year, but Audi officials have not confirmed the delay of the Q6 e-tron so far. .

It is worth noting that the new cooperation between CARIAD and Horizon, a leader in high-performance intelligent driving computing platforms, will accelerate the development of the Group’s advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous driving systems for the Chinese market. The Volkswagen Group plans to invest around 2.4 billion euros in the partnership, which is expected to close in the first half of 2023.
